Thank You Thank You’s Tyler Bussey Makes a Playlist

Oof’s very own Tyler Bussey shares some of his favorite tracks with some pretty fun commentary.

You can listen to the full playlist on Sp*tify. (cover art by Emily Burtner)

His debut EP NEXT TO NOTHING is out now.

1. Another Michael, “New Music”

One of the distinct joys of living in Philadelphia has been getting to meet, befriend, and play shows with Another Michael. “New Music” floored me from the first time I heard it, especially that wordless harmonies section. Reminds me of early Loney Dear in the best way, but with their own beautiful and beguiling spin on things.

2. Doveman, “Secret”

Basically everything I want in music. Read the liners and find everything everyone in this group has ever done. It will take you at least a year and you will thank me.

3. Friendship, “Not An Exit”

Another top-tier Philadelphia band that I’ve been fortunate enough to watch evolve up close, and the last band I toured with pre-pandemic. Such an inventive, sensitive ensemble, and Dan’s lyrics are as good as it gets, but maybe next time you listen, try paying close attention to just these three elements: the different ways Dan holds out the last syllable of each verse ("forever"); Pete’s tender pedal steel melody that always returns, faithfully; and Mike’s drumming.

4. Björk, “Where Is The Line”

Song is buckwild.

5. Barna Howard, “Turns Around the Bottle”

Shouts out to my Mama Bird friends and family from way back. This one is near and dear to me.

6. The Prisonaires, “Just Walkin’ in the Rain”

“Who can that fool be?” This one catches the heart off guard and blows it wide open.

7. Bill Callahan, “The Breeze / My Baby Cries” (originally written and performed by Kath Bloom)

This one does, too.

8. The Durutti Column, “They Work Every Day”

Can you tell I love guitars?

9. Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek, “Jonathan”

Like “Paul” but with a lovelier touch, a glimpse of perfect harmony that’s gone while the wound is fresh. “Honey, I won’t keep you long.”

10. Lambchop, “The New Cobweb Summer”

“The link between profound and pain / covers you / like Sherwin Williams.” Kurt Wagner was and remains one of the best to do it, I listen to this song all the time no matter what, still working at uncovering it.

11. Bob Dylan, “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”

I love when Bob gets this playful.

12. Radiator Hospital, “Stories We Could Tell”

I have a lot of involuntary physical reactions to music and when Sam hits those high, intense notes, the hairs on my arms and neck stand up and I feel electric. Incredible band with the best melodies.

13. David Allred, “For Catherine E. Coulson”

David is a gentle soul with a bottomless pit of music in him.

14. Gillian Welch, “I Dream A Highway”

Sometimes I think this might be the greatest recording ever made and the rest of the time I know it. "I watch the waitress for a thousand years."

15. 2nd Grade, “Over and Over”

Members of Friendship. Another Philly crew I adore. The last time I saw them was in my basement and I danced like the dumbass I am the whole time. I miss that.

16. Jay Som, “Devotion”

Melina made an addictive slinky tune, feels like dancing on a moving walkway.

17. John Martyn, “Couldn’t Love You More”

One of the most romantic songs ever, listen to all the ways John Martyn sings!

18. Jodi, “Remember”

A timeless modern classic.

19. Johnny Clegg and Savuka, “Don’t Walk Away”

"Tremendous stars." Thank you to Nick for showing me this incredible video.
